THE STATE

director, writer, performer, creator
The State was an eleven member sketch comedy group that formed in 1988 at NYU. We did live shows and short films and eventually did a pilot for an series in '92, which led to 27 episodes on MTV. The show's first season is finally availabe on iTunes and will hopefully be on DVD someday. Members of the State have gone onto co-create Reno 911!, Viva Variety, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, The Ten, Balls of Fury, Sex: AKA Weiners and Boobs and more...

SUPERJAIL (2008/Adult Swim)

A totally surreal comedic series set in, well, a super jail.
on Adult Swim
PARTY DOWN (2009/Starz)
director, episode 206 “Not on Your Wife” Opening Night
I was a huge fan of this show then got to direct one!
THE STATE HALLOWEEN SPECIAL (1996/CBS)
director, writer, performer, supervising producer
Our ill-fated foray into network television, originally intended to be a series of specials leading up to a late night slot against SNL. Long story but basically it didn't work out!

SHEEP IN THE BIG CITY (2000/Cartoon Network)
writer, performer, composer
I wrote a couple of episodes of this animated series that was created by my friend Mo Willems. Mo was the founder of The Sterile Yak sketch comedy group at NYU, the group Todd Holoubek left to start The State.
You can see it on iTunes.
STRANGERS WITH CANDY (2000/Comedy Central)

I loved working with Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert on this great show.

A short-lived sketch comedy series on VH1, most notable for its cast which included Michael Ian Black, Jim Gaffigan, Michael Showalter.

APARTMENT #2F (1997/MTV)
writer, segment director, performer
A hybrid MTV sitcom created by and starring Randy and Jason Sklar.
THE DAILY SHOW (1996/Comedy Central)
segment director, correspondent
In the first few weeks on the air, when Craig Kilborn was the host and they were still trying to figure out what the show was, I did sixteen segments of "The Maplewood Minute" -- gossipy reports of the unexciting goings-on in a fictional small town.
YOU WROTE IT, YOU WATCH IT (1992/MTV)
writer, director, performer
Eleven were given a single office room, $50 prop budget and $300 weekly salary to create three short films per week, acting as our own crew. Jon Stewart hosted this MTV series where viewers would submit funny stories and we would re-enact them in the form of short films. The first TV appearance of The State as a group.
CHRIS ISAAK: IN YOUR FACE (1989/VH1)
writer
A funny VH1 show produced by my friend Jon Bendis.

CRANK YANKERS (2003/Comedy Central)
actor
It was kind of funny but I felt bad making fun of people on the phone.
RENO 911 (2003, 2008/Comedy Central)
actor
Didn't realize it was COMPLETELY improvised till I showed up on set and they bascially put me half-naked in a hotel room with a cop and said "Action"! It was great to work with my old State partners.
COMEDY CENTRAL PRESENTS: STELLA (2004)

This was a live special we did for Comedy Central not long before doing the pilot for our series there.
COSBY (CBS/1999)

A couple of lines.
FLASHBACK FLIX (VH1/2004)

This was a great pilot from Amy Poehler and Amy Miles, where a live band and comic actors would would recreate classic movies. Didn't get picked up for series.
